This is the story of William D. Zartman, who was born and grew up in Shamokin, a small coal-mining town in eastern Pennsylvania. As Bill tells his story, we learn that his father owned one of the town's most interesting stores, Mon's Place, where the miners, some of the most memorable characters you'll ever meet, filled their gas tanks, ate lunch, played pool or cards, and, generally, "loafed." But Bill, eager to leave Shamokin from the day he left high school, first found his escape route via a sales job, then in a much more dangerous pursuit when he became the youngest member of Darby's Rangers, America's elite fighting force in World War II. Wounded and captured in Italy, he was imprisoned in one of Nazi Germany's brutal work camps until he managed one of the war's most improbable escapes.

East to the Russkies eBook Bill Zartman Reviews
What a terrific story?
First time author William Zartman does a wonderful job recounting his experiences during World War II. I found his story of growing up in Shamokin, PA to life as a Ranger, and his eventual capture and escape from a German POW camp utterly compelling. Zartman tells his story of wartime with complete class and dignity. We know the horrors of war, and in particular, the atrocities of World War II, but Zartman does not feature these elements. Rather, he tells his story from the human side of events and the perseverance and occasional good fortune that facilitated his escape and eventual journey back to America. I found his attention to detail, recollection of events, and approach to storytelling completely entertaining. A great read for anyone interested in the topic. And another reminder why Zartman's generation does represent our greatest generation.

Bill Zartman's book gave me a fresh insight into how dangerous the action was and how terrifying it must have been to have been captured by the Germans.
The movies and TV try to paint a picture, but the truth is often distorted.
Bill's accounts helped me to see the constant stress and the endless fear to which every veteran was exposed.
I would like to think I would have been as brave and daring as he. Escape wasn't just a simple process, but in his case, a series of complicated and carefully thought out plans.
Bill's youth proved to be a huge advantage in his attempt to get and remain free of the Germans. I don't know many 16 and 17 year old boys who are able to run their lives independently and acquire success in as many ways as Bill did to survive.
Bill doesn't use Hollywood blood and guts to get his message across. His down to earth, matter of fact approach in telling his story makes it honest and believable.
However, his simple and direct manner takes a little away from how truly daring and frightening his experiences were. He was much braver than he gives himself credit for.
I recommend Bill's book to anyone who wants to know the truth of being a prisoner of war. No pretty pictures - just straight talk. How I wish members of our various political parties would take lseesons from Bill.
East to the Russkies is an excellent book. I'm glad I read it, and I will want to reread it again very soon !
I was totally taken by this book; once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The book is an autobiography with two main parts the author's life growing up in a mining town and his soldiering experience in World War II climaxing with an escape from a Nazi prison camp.
As I read about the store/gathering spot that the author's father ran in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, I longed to be like the main character in Woody Allen's movie Midnight in Paris who travels back in time. I wanted go back to Mon's Place in the 1930's and hang out and shoot pool with the locals. The author delightfully described a community where times were tough, but everyone knew each other and supported each other. The author took me to a special place that just doesn't exist today.
I wondered if I would be as brave as the author was when he enlisted in the army and became part of an elite group of soldiers called the Darby Rangers. This is where the book changed from warm memories of a slower time to chilling memories of an action-filled war. The book became a page turner for me. The mental pictures that I painted of the author's war experience will be with me a long time. I was left with immense admiration for all of those who have served.
If you're interested in reading a well written first hand account of life in a coal mining town before WW2 and in an elite fighting troop in Italy during WW2, then this book is for you.
