Love the history of my ancestors!
Not a "light" read given it was written mid-19th-Century. As a history buff, however, I did learn a great number of things I had been exposed to before regarding the reigns of the monarchs of the Tudor Dynasty.
Coming in at 7,278 locations, the author has summed up England under the Tudors, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward, Mary and Elizabeth I. That's a lot of history for one book, so it's a good general history, but you will definitely want a more specialized book for the extra details. The author also liked Mary Stuart and Mary Tudor, so it's not too shocking that his opinion of Elizabeth isn't very high, but he does correctly note that Elizabeth did put the English on the path of greatness.
It's a very good pickup for free for the . I suspect the version has been updated since some of the other reviews, as the formatting is fine.
England Under the Tudors is a very good historic account of the rule of England by Henry VII and VIII, Mary, and Elizabeth. Fills in lots of details and is very thorough. It is at times a bit one-sided and judgmental but is overall a valuable overview of the Tudor Dynasty.
I am not unknowledgeable about the Tudors taken individually. The author, however, puts them together in a manner that makes each of them more understandable. I greatly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
One aside The formatiing makes it somewhat difficult to read, but not extraodinarily so.
This is like the history text books we had in the 1950's, which it may have been.
Pure unadorned text. No concessions to short attention spans here.
I read it on my Ipad however and was able to switch to Wikipedia for analysis, pictures and maps as the mood took me. Wonderful stuff.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and can heartily recommend it.
You don't have to take my word for it either. Google the author's name and read a review written when it was first published, 1938.

I would recommend Mr. Innes' work, England under the Tudors. It is filled with a dense tapestry of the European monarchs and influencers of the mid to late 16th century, how they were related, and how they relentlessly and usually mercilessly maneuvered these relationships for their personal benefit. Mr. Innes paints these interconnections as the UK and Europe entered their final throes of rule by individuals and oligarchies laying the foundation for a more enlightened rule of law.
My reasons for not giving the book 4 stars are its somewhat convoluted style at times, which is sometimes demanding to follow but characteristic of other histories written at the turn of the 20th century, and identifying people with a frequent interchangeable use of their names, multiple and changing titles, and regions ruled. Those of us who were not raised on the complex family tree of UK and European Who's Who may find this difficult at times with such a large cast of characters. Those familiar with European and UK history will find this a smaller obstacle.
All in all this is a very informative, scholarly review of a politically, socially, and religiously tumultuous and critically formative time in the UK and Europe. It also provides a good foundation to better understand why Great Britain behaved the way it did vis-à-vis the 13 colonies.
